Art Director
The Art Director reports to the General Manager and Executive Producer of the company. This is a senior management position with a broad range of responsibilities. The Art Director will guide the development of a strong artistic vision and oversee a team of over 40 artists split between Boston and Shanghai. The Art Director has seven direct reports that include some of the best art leads in the industry. We are committed to and focused on developing AAA quality games for the Asian and eventually global market.
Job Description
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Work with all functional departments to guide the vision and artistic direction of the game
Recruit, manage and mentor a team of internal and external artists to produce outstanding work
Design, implement and maintain the art pipeline for both internal and external teams
Develop art style and reference guides for use by internal and external teams
Help to develop and maintain a healthy and positive company culture
Help define game requirements and find artistic solutions to them
Provide clear and consistent feedback and critiques to subordinate artists, as well as other senior management
International travel to China required - 25% of time
EXPERIENCE
A Bachelors Degree in Art from an accredited school
At least seven years experience in the game industry
At least 3 published games credits
Worked on at least 1 quality game in lead role from start to finish
Experience in many of the skill sets of artistic game development, including concepting, animation, modeling, texturing, lighting, etc.
Management experience leading a team of artists
Familiarity with industry standard tools and software
Experience working on MMOs is preferred
Experience in art recruiting is an asset
Experience in presentation is an asset
Experience in working with outsourced art teams and art integration is an asset
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to articulate clearly an artistic vision through concept art, conversation and documentation, and to implement that vision through a team of artists
Ability to balance a project’s creative and visual requirements with schedule, budget and staffing limitations
Ability to identify interdepartmental issues and conflicts early and help to resolve them (such as design and technical decisions which will affect the art workflow or quality, and vice versa)
Strong communication skills
Ability to plan, document and maintain an art schedule, budget and staffing plan from preproduction to post-launch for a team of artists
Strong decision-making and conflict resolution skills
Track-record of earning respect from subordinates, peers, and superiors alike
Patience and a strong sense of humor are an absolute must
